Amsonia hubrectii
Arkansas Amsonia
Size: 3' x 5'
Exposure: Full Sun
Flower: Blue tubes in June
Amsonia's entrance into mainstream gardening has been a fairly recent
event. Although it should had been readily available as soon
as it was first described by a botanist.
A finely textured plant, Amsonia adds grace and beauty to the
garden, even between its seasonal shows. During June, blue
flwoers top the ends of each bottlebrush-like "cane", creating a nice
but not overwhelming reproductive display. As the flowers
fade, the thin, light green foliage drifts back and forth in the
slightest breeze. Fall turns this beauty into a mound of
straw colored foliage that lasts for several weeks. It is a
great, almost irreplaceable addition to the fall garden.
To top off all these garden attributes, Amsonia tolerates poor soils
and drought extremely well.
