Aralia cordata
Udo Aralia
Size: 6' x 6'
Exposure: Part to full shade
Flowers: Creamy white clusters (corymbs) in late June
Don't be afraid! This cousin of our native Aralia (A. spinosa) is not
armed with copious amounts of thorns. While some spines are
present, they are very small and somewhat soft.
Udo Aralia will not reach the monsterous 15' heights it does out West
because its stems typically die back to ground level each winter.
This translates into a dense shrub in the garden where its
beautiful flowers can be experienced at eye level.
Once the flowers have passed, gorgeous purple-black fruit mature to add
another dynamic trait to this species. The berries will
persist for a few weeks until they are gobbled up by birds.
