Characteristics:
What
color! Aubury
Purple comes to life in the spring with deep purple foliage, almost to
the tone
of black. The color
display lasts until
the heat of the summer fades the leaves to an emerald green, only to
return to
purple again in the fall. During
the
summer, bright yellow flowers adorn the ends of each branch in clusters
measuring around 3” in diameter. Once
the flowers are past, the seed heads manage to create some additional
interest
with their reddish capsules. H. androsaemum despises excessive winter
moisture. However,
summer dryness poses
no problems for this beauty. The
plant
can be cut back in mid April to retain foliage intensity and
compactness. Hardiness
has been in question for this
species, but Ben witnessed this plant in Bernheim’s nursery for several
years
with no losses.
