Callicarpa dichotoma 'Duet'
Variegated
Beautyberry
Size: 4' x 4'
Exposure: Full to Partial sun, best with evening shade
Flower: Very light lavender
The National Arboretum has really come up with a winner this time.
Found as a branch sport on Callicarpa dichotoma
'Leucocarpa', Duet has very uniform, creamy-white edged foliage.
The variegation holds up extraordinarily well in full sun,
showing no scorch or fading apparent. However, it must be
noted the foliage curls up when exposed to intense sunlight.
While not disgusting to view, it is somewhat of an unusual
trait. The leaf curling can be alleviated by providing, at
minimum, some evening shade.
During June, very light lavender flower clusters line the branches.
Because of their pale coloration and the variegated leaves,
they are not as striking as green-leaved plants. The fruits,
while present, are white and completely lost in the variegation.
Overall Duet is a tough plant that can reliably add color to the
garden
all growing season.
