Kerria japonica ‘Golden
Guinea’
Japanese Kerria
Size: 6’ X
Spreading
Exposure: Sun
to Shade
Flower Time:
Heavy in May, sporadic throughout the growing season
Ornamental Characteristics:
With the ability to tolerate the nastiest soils and the
gamut of light exposures, Kerria is a truly versatile shrub. It serves the great purpose of filling large
swaths because of its moderate spreading habit.
Kerria's also makes a fantastic backdrop to the garden. In both situations, the bright yellow flowers
put on a fantastic show in the spring and a nice injection of color throughout
the growing season with sporadic flowering.
Golden Guinea
has the largest of these flowers, exceeding 1 ½” in diameter. Once frost has taken its toll of the foliage
and blooms, the stems brighten the winter areas with their bright green
color. To increase the intensity of the
color and keep the plant more compact, it should be cut to about 12” each
April.
