Exposure: Full

Flower
Time:
June
Ornamental
Characteristics:
It
is time to deviate from the norm.
I. p. is a
very common evergreen shrub down South, but has received little
attention up
here in “tweener land” where it is likely to tolerate the cold KY
winters just
fine with protection. While
the flowers
are insignificant and lack the pungent anise fragrance, the foliage is
the true
reason for this plant’s beauty. Deep
green, 3” X 1” leaves create a dense mounded shrub, guaranteeing a
staple of
interest throughout the entire year.
I. p. is tolerant of many soil conditions,
winter exposure to more than ½ day of sun or desiccating winds will
prove
fatal. While
speaking with the Director
of Horticulture at Bernheim Arboretum, she mentioned that the I.p. I planted 7 years ago is still
doing well.
