A
native of the Southeastern US,
Lonicera sempervirens offers an
alternative to the overly-aggressive and heavy winters we have fought
for
decades. Because of
its light stem
weight, fast growth and extended flowering periods, John Clayton is
great for
small arbors and lattice.
With
its essentially continual yellow flowers, J.C. can
really provide consistent color to the garden for the whole growing
season. It has
shown good resistance to
powdery mildew and leaf spot. All
must
be forewarned that there is a species specific aphid for honeysuckles
that will
appear in spring. While
they can cause
sooty mold on the foliage, natural predators will eventually balance
their
population out to where they are not a significant issue.
