Sambucus
nigra
‘Madonna’
Variegated Elderberry
Size: 6’ X 6’
Exposure: Sun
to Part Shade
Flower
Time:
June
Ornamental
Characteristics:
Sambucus
can be found along the roadsides across the US. Because of its native
haunts and frequency of
occurrence, the genus is thought of as a weed.
This could not be further from the truth though. There are a few
purple-leaved forms that have
gained in popularity over the past few years, leaving several other
color
selections in obscurity. Madonna
is one
of these overlooked beauties. The
leaves
of this plant have a great uniform golden border on the edge
surrounding a
medium green center. Their
toleration of
terrible soils, wet conditions and drought make them a versatile
addition to
any garden. Treat
the species as a
cutback shrub to maintain control of its height and foliage color.
