Spiraea
thunbergii
‘Ogon’
Yellow-leaved Spirea
Size: 4’ X 4’
Exposure: Sun
to Part Shade
Flower
Time:
April/May
Ornamental
Characteristics:
Spirea,
as a genus, has become a staple in our
landscapes. Their
ability to withstand
KY heat and cold and smaller size make them very useful. Ogon, while
not as
floriferous, has the same tolerance of KY climate.
Its true claim to fame is the fine textured,
yellow foliage that maintains its color until the ultimate heat of
summer fades
it to a light green. Once
cooler
temperatures arrive in the fall, the leaves take on a striking orange
hue. White 1”
clusters of flowers open in early
spring, adding another dimension to Ogon’s beauty.
While the shrub is very tough, excessive
drought will cause defoliation in not death.
