Hydrangea’s, as a straight species, truly have a
multitude of ornamental traits to offer the garden.
The wonderful, coarse foliage during the
summer months add a texture that is hard to find in a garden. Once the creamy white
panicles of flowers
emerge, the elegance of oakleafs appear.
Even as the flowers end their cycle, they go out with
grace by taking on
a pink hue, and then a darker, rusty red as all is over. Not to fear though. As the flowers finish
their duties, the
foliage picks up the slack by expressing a deep red fall color, only
rivalled
by few other plants in horticulture.
This autumn display lasts for weeks until the cold takes
its toll and
they float to the ground (okay, considering their size, they plunk to
the ground).
Then, when all hope is lost, the exfoliating bark on the stems
brightens the
winter months with its white underside.
Yes, Oakleafs are truly a 4 season plant and ‘Pee Wee’
does everything
described above, just in ½ scale.
The
impacts of the species exist with this selection, but its more
diminutive size
allow it to fit in other gardens once too small for its larger cousins.
