Penny
Mac is a jewel.
Because of Kentucky’s
curse of being squeezed between northern and southern climates, we are
forced
to grow many great garden plants knowing that they may or may not get
to fully
bloom or grow as much, depending on which winter we have. Big Leaf Hydrangeas fall
into this
category. H.
macrophylla sets its flower
buds in the summer before the spring it blooms.
Therefore, when it gets hit with a late frost or a more
severe winter
and the stems get frozen back to the ground, the blooms die along with
them. However, this
is no longer the
case. Penny Mac has
the capability to
set new buds if the overwintered ones die and bloom every summer. What a treat!
While
this reblooming ability
was in question for a while, the great folks at the University
of Kentucky
have proven this to be a definite recurring trait of this plant. Originally distributed by
