Ilex x ‘Red
Sprite’
Dwarf Deciduous Holly
Size: 5’ X 8’
Exposure: Full
Sun to Part Shade
Flower
Time:
June or July
Ornamental
Characteristics:
Deciduous
hollies fill a tremendous void in a garden’s
progression of color and interest.
They
hide, relatively unassuming, amongst more flamboyant plants until
winter shuts
its companions down. This
permits the intense
red fruit to brighten the area for the best of this dreary time. Red Sprite was selected
for its very dense,
uniform growth and heavy fruit set and persistence.
The size noted above is after a few decades
of growth. Many
deciduous hollies become
chlorotic when planted in alkaline soils.
A simple treatment of an acidifying fertilizer will
correct this
issue. The males
for Red Sprite are
Apollo and Jim Dandy.
