Sophora japonica
(Boone Gardiner’s Weeping)
Unnamed Weeping Scholar Tree
Size: 12’ x 20’
Exposure: Full Sun to Light Shade
Flower: Creamy white
panicles in June
Scholar Tree has grabbed the interests of horticulturists
for years. Their tolerance of heavy,
compacted soils, drought and resistance to insects and diseases make it very
attractive for urban settings.
This weeping form takes a great plant and makes it much
better. Its very strong, but graceful
branching adds a wonderful form to the garden that cannot be bought at
Wal-Mart. The deep green foliage stays
within eyesight to enjoy the fine texture and softness it purveys.
When the flowers appear, the plant explodes into a frenzy of
creamy white “puffs”, which act as a great food source for bees. Once they are past and time has progressed,
the 3” seed pods add another element of interest albeit subtle.
While it is reported that about 60% of seeds gathered from
weeping Sophora’s will carry the weeping trait, it is the consensus of
plantspeople in this area that Boone’s weeping is by far the best around. This is why we are offering grafted liners of
only this selection.
