‘Winter Flame’
Winter
Flame Shrub Dogwood
Size: 6’ X 6’
Exposure: Sun
to Part Shade
Flowering
Time:
June
Ornamental
Characteristics:
Shrub
dogwoods are a common occurrence in today’s
gardens. Most have
a winter stem color
of red or yellow. This
is not the case
for Winter Flame. It
breaks this mold
with stems that are red at the tip, fading to an orange in the middle
and
ultimately to yellow at the base. The overall effect is as if there is
a warm
fire in your garden during the dull days of winter.
While the stems are Winter Flame’s true
reason for existence, its 3 to 4 inch flower clusters are a nice
addition
during the month of June. Shrub
dogwoods
tolerate moist growing soils well, but will perform poorly in
exceedingly dry
locations. We recommend regular removal of old wood to maintain the
plant’s
compactness and intensity of winter color.
