Caryopteris
x
clandonensis ‘Woester Gold’
Yellow-leaved Blue Mist
Shrub
Size;
3’ X 3’
Exposure: Sun
Flower
Time:
July
Ornamental
Characteristics:
C. x clandonensis
has been around for quite some time. Its dark lavender flowers have
succeeded
in cooling the hot summer days when many other plants are just trying
to stay
alive. ‘Woester
Gold’ adds another
dimension of interest with its gold foliage during the entire growing
season. Well
drained soils are preferred
by this selection. Moderate
dryness is
not problem for this garden jewel, but excessive winter moisture will
cause its
death. Many will
say this plant is
unreliable in the landscape because of its habit of “just up and dying”
without
warning. ‘Woester
Gold’ does do this as
every other Caryopteris, but understanding this and realizing that it
will need
to be replaced about every 5 years reduces the level of frustration and
teaches
one to appreciate its ornamental value.
